2) About this Document

The document covers what you need to know to download, install and use the HTTP Speed+Mobility Prototype Client, and configure your own Server if you are so inclined.

3) Target Audience

The target audience is developers interested in the standardization of HTTP 2.0 who want to evaluate a working implementation of the HTTP Speed+Mobility proposal (http://tools.ietf.org/html/montenegro-httpbis-speed-mobility-01) that was presented at IETF 83 in Paris.

4) Requirements

To build the source code, the following is required:
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2010

In order to install and use the HTTP Speed+Mobility Prototype Client, the following are required:
- Windows 7 Client
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0

In order to run the server, the server machine will need to support:
- Node.JS

5) Installing the HTTP Speed+Mobility Prototype Client

Download the MSI file from this location: http://html5labs.com/prototypes/http2/http2/download and run it.
Note that you can access the source code of this open source project from the Microsoft Open Technologies section of GitHub.

Follow the prompts and once complete files will be installed to the selected location. By default, it will be the Temp folder of the current user, i.e. something like C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Temp\Microsoft Open Technologies Inc\HTTP Speed+Mobility Prototype Client\.

A shortcut will be added to the desktop.

6) How to use the Client

- Double click on the "HTTP Speed+Mobility" icon installed on the desktop of your machine, or alternatively run "client.exe" from the installation folder.

- The client will start by displaying the following message:

	HTTP Speed+Mobility Prototype Client help

	HELP Display this help information
CONNECT [C|S| ] <URI> Connect to the server endpoint. If no URI is specified,
        	                      defaults to ws://smserver.cloudapp.net:8080
defaults to no compression of headers
                                  'C' enables compression of headers
'S' enables stateful compression of headers
	DIR List files on server.
GET <filename> Download web page and associated resources using
					              the S+M Protocol. E.g. GET /files/test.txt
	VERBOSE [1|2|3] Display verbose output.
	CAPTURE-STATS [On|Off|Reset] Start/stop/reset protocol monitoring.
DUMP-STATS Display statistics captured using CAPTURE-STATS.
HTTPGET Download file using HTTP 1.1
                                  Ex. http://localhost:8080/microsoft/default.htm
	CLOSE Close session
    RUN <filename> Run command script
	EXIT Exit application

	Please type a command:

6.1) CONNECT

The first step after launching the client is to issue a CONNECT command

If you have set up your own S+M server, add the URI of that server. Otherwise leave blank. The client will automatically connect to the default Azure endpoint:

	connect
	Executing connect
	[2:58:17 PM] INFO:Session is opened: ws://smserver.cloudapp.net:8080/

CONNECT command accepts additional switch ('c' or 's')
'c' enabled compression of HTTP headers using static dictionary
's' enables compression of HTTP headers using dynamic dictionary

	connect s ws://smserver.cloudapp.net:8080/

Connect to Azure endpoint, use dynamic header copression

6.2) DIR

Once you are connected to the server, use DIR to see a list of the documents available for download from the server (this is accomplished by downloading and then displaying the content of a special "index" file):

	DIR
	Executing dir
	[2:59:24 PM] INFO:Stream is opened: id=1
	[2:59:24 PM] INFO:File downloaded: index

	/Files/test.txt
	/Files/test3Mb.txt
	/IETF/IETF.html
	/Microsoft/default.htm
	/WebSite/test.html
	/WWWC/WWWC(W3C).html

	[2:59:24 PM] INFO:Bytes transferred:134 upstream, 128 downstream, 262 Total

6.3) GET

In order to download a file, issue a GET statement followed by the path of the file. The client will download the file. Then it will parse its content and download any associated resources similarly to what a web browser does:

	GET /website/test.html
	Executing get /website/test.html
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:Stream is opened: id=3
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:File downloaded: test.html
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:Stream is opened: id=5
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:Stream is opened: id=7
	...
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:Bytes transferred:146 upstream, 14069 downstream, 14215 Total
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:File downloaded: testImage1.jpg
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:Bytes transferred:153 upstream, 3002 downstream, 3155 Total
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:File downloaded: testImage14.jpg
	[3:08:39 PM] INFO:Bytes transferred:154 upstream, 3002 downstream, 3156 Total
	...

	[3:08:40 PM] INFO:File downloaded: test3.css
	[3:08:40 PM] INFO:Bytes transferred:146 upstream, 391 downstream, 537 Total

The client displays a message whenever a new stream is opened within the session. It also prints the amount of data that moved over the wire whenever a file transfer completes.

6.4) VERBOSE

VERBOSE controls the amount of information that is displayed in response to the various commands, where 1 is the least amount, and 3 is the fullest amount:

	VERBOSE 2
	Executing verbose 2
	[1:06:39 AM] INFO:VERBOSE output VerboseLogging

6.5) Statistics

The client keeps track by default of all the frames (data and control) it exchanges with the server. The CAPTURE-STATS command allows to either stop the capture, reset it if it is in progress, or start it again if it was stopped:

	CAPTURE-STATS on
	Executing capture-stats on

	CAPTURE-STATS reset
	Executing capture-stats reset

	CAPTURE-STATS off
	Executing capture-stats off

The DUMP-STATS command will display the aggregate information on the files

6.6) HTTPGET

This command is provided to compare the information moved over the wire by the HTTP Speed+Mobility implementation vs. the current HTTP 1.1 standard. The same statistics on bytes exchanged and header information are displayed on the console according to the value of the VERBOSE setting:

	HTTPGET http://microsoft.com
	Executing httpget http://microsoft.com
	[1:08:19 AM] INFO:HTTP response: 301, length: 484
	[1:08:19 AM] INFO:
	--------------------
	Headers: GET http://microsoft.com/ HTTP/1.1
	Host: microsoft.com:80
	Connection: Keep-Alive
	User-Agent: SMClient
	Accept: text/plain,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8
	Length: 160
	--------------------
	...

	______________________________________
        	        TOTAL
Total size of data received(bytes): 23
Total size of headers received(bytes): 461
	Total size received(bytes): 484
Total size of headers sent(bytes): 160
Total size of data exchanged(bytes): 644
Total count of requests sent: 1
Total count of responses received: 1
Total count of connections opened: 1
	______________________________________

6.7) CLOSE

Issuing a CLOSE will terminate the session with the server but leave the client active.

	CLOSE
	Executing close
[12:35:06 AM] INFO:Current session is closed.
	[12:35:06 AM] INFO:Session closed

6.8) EXIT

Issuing EXIT from the command line will close the session and shut down the client

6.9) RUN

RUN allows to execute commands from a script file.
The Script file is just a text file with one command per line.
Lines that starts with '#' are comments
Execute the script by passing it as an argument to RUN
'Client run test.txt'

Below is an example of a script

#--------------------------------------
# Script to download a web page from server using S+M and HTTP1.1
# The statistics are displayed side by side.
#
#
# Set verbose output to Info
#
VERBOSE 2
#
# Connect to Azure endpoint (ws://smserver.cloudapp.net:8080)
#
CONNECT
#
# Get file with Speed+Mobility protocol
#
GET /files/test.txt
#
# Get files with HTTP1.1
#
HTTPGET /files/test.txt
#
# Display statistics side by side
#
DUMP-STATS
#--------------------------------------

6.10) HTTP2GET

This command operates exactly like HTTPGET excepts that it starts the communication over HTTP/1.1, while requesting an upgrade to HTTP/2.0 as described in the proposal http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-montenegro-httpbis-http2-negotiation/

7) Installing and configuring the server

- Download and install node.js from http://nodejs.org/.

- Download and install the websocket server code from http://einaros.github.com/ws/

- Download the additional S+M server files or modified websocket files from https://github.com/MSOpenTech/HTTP-SPEED-PLUS-MOBILITY/tree/master/SMServer

- From a command line window run the following:

	node <path to server.js>.

The Server.js file is located in the SMServer folder in the downloaded source code folder.

By default, the server runs on port 8080. Note that depending on your firewall’s configuration you may need to open this port, in order for the server to operate properly.
